Can Art by Street Artist My Dog Sighs
Street artist My Dog Sighs lives in Portsmouth, UK where he creates can art with a whimsical twist. The artist works with crushed metal cans that were once used for food storage. The painted bottoms become the heads of his playful characters. These humorous paintings feature masked heroes, Danse Macabre faces, and even big eyed babies. Cans are an unusual format for a canvas, however with the addition of expressive faces and dewy water drops, they are completely transformed into small works of art. See more below.

Humorous and Nostalgic Watercolors by Wolstenholme
Illustrator Jonathan Wolstenholme is a fine artist living in London who depicts still lifes feature animated books with arms engaged in humorous scenarios. His paintings are created using watercolors on paper. These antiquarian books are busily smoking pipes and writing letters. The works are a deliberate celebration of vintage charm and are filled with many nostalgic details from the past. See more below!

Tom Beddard (aka subblue) has been responsible for some of the most fascinating work being done with fractals. His totally mesmerizing video of fractal shapes morphing into one another was one of the first things I posted on this blog.
In his series Fabergé Fractals he has created digitally generated objects with designs as intricate as the eggs they're named after.
Beddard on his work:
The 3D fractals are generated by iterative formulas whereby the output of one iteration forms the input for the next. The formulas effectively fold, scale, rotate or flip space. They are truly fractal in the fact that more and more detail can be revealed the closer to the surface you travel.
The fascinating aspect is where combinations of parameters can combine to create structural "resonances" of extraordinary detail and beauty—sometimes naturally organic and other times perfectly geometric. But then like a chaotic system it can completely disappear with the smallest perturbation.

Preview: Jeremy Hush at Thinkspace
Coming up this Saturday, Jeremy Hush has a new show opening at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City with Lindsey Carr and Frank Gonzales titled "Curioso." Harkening back to children's book illustrations of the Victorian Era, Hush creates dark fairytale narratives through dense line work and earth-toned hues. In these sprawling compositions, the spirit of youth is juxtaposed with worlds where ghostly creatures inhabit eroded terrains. Looming amid these depictions of beings, biological and otherworldly, childlike and decaying, is a reminder of both the beginning and imminent end to every lifecycle. Check out an early preview of the show, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes photos below.

Sonia Rentsch's Plant Sculptures Put Violence into Question
Australian artist and designer Sonia Rentsch and photographer Albert Comper recently collaborated to create a series of photos depicting mock weapons composed of organic materials. With their simple geometry, the soft plant forms take the gun shapes out of their context, stripping them of their aggressive connotation and inspiring curiosity rather than fear. Take a look at some of the artworks below.

Studio Visit with Chuck Sperry
Chuck Sperry is a busy man these days. The artist is preparing his studio gallery, Hangar18 in Oakland, for a pop-up art show and print sale hosted in collaboration withVarnish Fine Art this Thursday. Shortly after, he will jet set to Italy for his touring exhibition, "The Flowers of Popular Victories." The tour's first stop is Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in Rome, which will open a month-long solo show of Sperry's work on June 7. But the event Sperry is anxiously preparing for is his site-specific installation at a Catholic church, the Oratorio Santa Maria in Selaa, in the small coastal town of Tellaro, Italy June 10-15. For this special event, Sperry is teaming up with Bill Ham (whose credits include psychedelic light projections for the Grateful Dead) and electronic musician Franz Treichler (singer of The Young Gods) to create an immersive audio-visual installation on the inside and outside of the Oratorio.
Sperry invited Hi-Fructose into his studio and gave us an inside look at the production process behind his large-scale screen printed artworks. Take a look at some behind-the-scenes photos from Sperry's studio below and check out his website for more information about the special events from his touring exhibition this summer.

Harry Holland's Fantastical Paintings of Nudes
Painter Harry Holland uses his penchant for realism to create whimsical paintings where classical nudes are seen in action rather than in states of repose, where we usually expect to find them. His characters run in packs, seemingly endowed with mystical powers like the Grecian muses or witches from European literature. Rather than coming across as delicate bodies intended for eye candy, these figures appear to have broken free from the frames of traditional nude portraits hung in museums and galleries and reclaimed their agency. Take a look at some of Holland's work below.

Kyung Sunghyun's Hallucinatory Portraits
Korean painter Kyung Sunghyun mimics overexposed photographs in his work, blurring faces like old memories that lose their precision with time. The characters are caught between expressions. Twinkles of mischief, joy and sometimes sadness appear in their multiple smiles and eyes, yet it's difficult to piece together the emotion in their faces. It's as if the artist has captured them in a state of change, freezing dynamic motion in one frame. Take a look at some of Kyung Sunghyun's work below.

Opening Night: Dan Quintana's "Zero Instruments" at Varnish Fine Art
Last Saturday, Dan Quintana (featured in our current issue) debuted his solo show "Zero Instruments" at San Francisco's Varnish Fine Art. For this body of work, Quintana stripped down the baroque style he is known for, presenting a new series of oil paintings and charcoal drawings imbued with a ghostly pallor. Rendered with an icy color palette, the new paintings bring about philosophical themes of the ephemerality of life with figures that billow and dissolve in the wind. Take a look at our exclusive photos from the opening reception below.

Beautifully Crafted Sculptures by Carol Brookes
Carol Brookes is a fine artist that has created a beautifully crafted body of work entitledPulse Vector. These mixed media wall sculptures are made from an assemblage of sculpting epoxy, zippers, pearls, tacks, nails, washers, acrylic, wood, canvas, and much more. Her sculptural works such as Pearl Revealed have an industrial feel and yet they convey an inherent softness. The artist incorporates a large range of items, and by combining pearls with metals, the work becomes both masculine and feminine, industrial and organic.
